"Boys in Our Books"…

…we're keeping our name but expanding our offerings!

Authors as Readers: Santino Hassell

…where we ask our favorite authors about their LGBT reading experiences…

What was the first book you’ve read?
*The first LGBT book that had an impact on me was Lost Souls by Poppy Z Brite. I’m sure that I read something before that, but Lost Souls stayed with me and left me wanting to find more. Interestingly enough, it wasn’t the openly gay character that struck me the most. It was the Steve/Ghost friendship and the idea of UST and potential GFY in a book. It was the first time I’d come across it and I was hooked.

What is your favorite book?
*Soldiers by Aleksandr Voinov and Marquesate. I’ve read a lot of awesome LGBT books over the past few years but none other knocked me out of my seat the way this one did.

What’s your favorite sub-genre/category (paranormal, shifters, cops, suspense, dystopian, BDSM, etc)?
*Suspense, for sure. Partially because that can extend to a lot of other sub-genres, but also because I like not knowing what’s going to happen next. I like anticipating outcomes based on clues and a rising sense of urgency to finish a book because the suspense is killing me.

Which book would you love to see made into a movie?
*The Psycop series by Jordan Castillo Price! Although, I could see that being made into a TV show as well. Either way it would be dope. Someone needs to get on top of that shit.

Which book do you wish you had written?
*That’s a tough question. I’m afraid I’d screw the books up! Maybe I’ll go back to my firsts and say I wish I’d written Lost Souls. Primarily because PBZ has decided not to write about those characters again and I’d love to tell more stories about Ghost and Steve.

Who is your book boyfriend?
*Wild Bill from the Channeling Morpheus series by Jordan Castillo Price. He could get it. Or give it. Or both. Probably both.

What book are you currently reading or reading next?
*I’m currently reading Spook Squad and I plan to read Shattered Glass next. I’m excited for both.

Soldiers -yeah! It’s what I compare every book against whenever I consider a 5 star review. A-MAZ-ING.

And you’re reading Shattered Glass next – coincidentally, I gave that 5 stars too. Clearly two VERY different books but SG is just fantastic. Sooo much fun XD

Soldiers was my very first LGBT read…it almost killed me! (but in a very exciting & unforgettable way)
Seriously, somebody pull on their Hollywood connections….we’ve got to find a way to take VIc and Jacob to the big screen.
I’m patiently waiting for my girls to come up for air (from their ICoS read) so we can buddy read After Midnight.
*hangs head in shame* I haven’t taken the ICoS plunge yet, but I’ve been promised AM will rock my world as a stand alone ;)

Oh god, Sheri. Have you seen the tortured posts by Jo and Anna while reading ICoS? Ha! So much goodness…I can’t wait for you to read it too! But, you’ll love After Midnight, for sure!

yes SQ, I have been fretting over the girls for weeks. And I remember very clearly when YOU disappeared into the depths of your kindle during your ICoS adventure!
It was shortly after BBE was born and I was worried sick over you (there were a lot of tear stained posts)
    *squares shoulders*
but I can and I will earn my ICoS badge someday :)
I’m pretty pumped for AM too…tell those girls to hurry it already!
