BDSM WEEK – GUEST READER REVIEW: “Submission” by Chris Owen & Jodi Payne

Boys in our Books welcomes Macky with a Guest Reader Review

ABOUT:

Tobias is a skilled Dom, able to bring even the most hesitant submissive around. Noah is a man in need of just that. He wants to sub badly, but has yet to find someone he believes can take him where he needs to go. Through a series of encounters in the world of bondage and discipline, Noah reveals why he has trouble trusting, why he needs such a firm, steady hand. Tobias may allow himself to dominate, but he has trouble letting himself love. Still, Tobias can’t resist Noah’s charms, and the two of them set about making a scene for themselves, one that works for them and their unique set of problems. They learn to love, but can they stay together while they explore each others’ secrets, in a world where all is laid bare and emotions run high? From authors Chris Owen, writer of the popular Bareback, and Jodi Payne, writer of String of Pearls comes a romance on the deviant side, where love is all tied up with the need to submit, the need to dominate, and the need to share a life of exploration and care. These two skilled authors create a world that’s hard to resist, and a book that’s even harder to put down.

REVIEW:

Tobias is a highly respected Dom but after his long standing sub Phantom breaks their contract because he feels that Tobias can’t fully give him what he needs, he steps away from the lifestyle for quite a long while until his friend and fellow Dom, Bradford, asks him to consider taking on another skittish sub called Noah who has been abused by one Dom and has since struggled to find a perfect fit with any other. They have a pretty intense first session together so agree to a trial partnership and what follows is not just a hot kink fest but a really enlightening glimpse into what I would think is a pretty authentic portrayal of the world of Domination and submission.

“Limits are important,” he said slowly. “You know that. You set them when you play, you live by them in your work. What you are doing sweetheart, is trying to find yours, to test yourself to get beyond them without knowing what they are. How long is it since you had a steady Dom?”

” If you needed it like breath?” Noah looked into his eyes again “Of course. That is my responsibility to you as your sub—to see your needs are met, To put your needs before mine. I’ll admit I’m not thrilled about the idea of licking your boots, but if you asked it of me? If I knew you needed it? Yes, yes I would”

What I loved was the connection and chemistry between the guys which was delicious and as their interactions and play became more passionate,  I became more invested in their budding relationship. It started out as just a contractual D/s partnership but over the course of the story I could see it growing more personal, and as they got closer began to fall in love with both of them to the point where reading the rest of this series has now become a must. The sex scenes were sizzling hot and the BDSM, whilst not being full on hardcore, was still at a level to satisfy readers who love their kink…spanking, paddling and flogging, bondage, naughty toys (use your imaginations!), goosebumpy tingly role playing (Really liked that! Yum!) and of course the strongest element in the story….the path to total Domination and submission.

However even though I loved it, I had moments in the early stage of their relationship when I found parts of it to be a tad ‘overly talky,’ because there’s a lot of negotiating and soul searching going on about how to make this particular D/s pairing work. Of course the good thing is you learn a lot about the trust and inner strength it takes to totally commit to the lifestyle but at times it did feel a bit long winded and I found myself wanting to wind it forward because my greedy inner smut slut wanted more action and less yakking – doesn’t mean that there isn’t plenty smexing though so don’t be worrying about that! The ending also felt slightly abrupt but because its a series I suppose that’s really a moot point as you know you’re going to more or less pick it up where it left off in book two.

A lot of people have said that they weren’t fans of Phantom, Tobias’ ex sub and lover who creates a spark of jealousy in Noah but personally I wanted more of Phan. Every time he was on page I felt my interest perk up a notch so I’m really looking forward to seeing more of him in the next three books. In retrospect looking back over the story apart from the Phan intervention, not a lot really happens apart from the deep conversations, the sub training and the ‘scenes’ – which are definitely worth the price of admission * fans self* but this is only the beginning of Tobias and Noah’s journey. Some likeable supporting characters who I think we’ll get to know more about as the series hots up and some subtle teasers of what’s to come have got me itching to get my hands on the whole set so bring ’em on!

I have to hold my hands up, I still don’t always get the dynamics. I do get frustrated at some of the discipline, I don’t understand getting pleasure from pain, I’d be a bloody bolshy sub and I couldn’t even dominate a fluffy bunny if my life depended on it! But damn it the more BDSM books I read, the more that kinky minx inside me wants out … and no one’s more surprised than me. Looks like I’ll definitely be adding more dark chocolate to my vanilla from now on.

So please Sir, can I give it four bottom spanking stars? ;)
