BDSM WEEK – REVIEW: “Some Kind of Stranger” Katrina Strauss

Boys in our Books welcomes Trix with a Guest Reader Review

ABOUT:

When Derek rescues a drugged, blue-haired waif from a ruthless predator, he’s given the opportunity to explore his dark, dominant nature. He molds Blue into the perfect submissive, but is Blue at his mercy or is Derek at Blue’s?

REVIEW:

What rating to give this book? I feel like I maybe started with too high expectations and thus doomed it to disappoint me in one way or another. I had prepared myself for some rough BDSM and deep exploration of the soul. And the story only gave me a whiff of both. Or perhaps I’ve read too much hardcore stuff and I am jaded for anything else. Perhaps readers who are looking for a smutty,  but bland read that goes beyond vanilla will enjoy this better. For me it lacked depth,  emotion and BDSM.

I was quite anxious when I started reading. Early on, the dominant MC, Derek, confessed that he had been abused and still felt psychologically shaken up by the events. I personally wouldn’t have trusted someone in that condition to assume the role of Dominant. I was never quite sure if he was truly in command or simply stumbling his way through the events. And even without that additional weight to unbalance him, Derek didn’t quite fit the image I have in my head of a Dom. I wanted more control from him, both in and out of bed. I understand that the idea was to show that the other MC, the young Blue, was causing mischief. But I wished there had been a way to achieve this without Derek lacking authority. I was worried for Blue when Derek commented that “Yet in lieu of sympathy, the sound of the boy crying elicited something cruel and dark in him.” However, that particular teaser never led anywhere. And later we learn from Blue that he intentionally cries, knowing that Derek likes seeing tears.

I felt there was no BDSM push behind the scenes, no catharsis. The pair did engage in several BDSM moments (spanking – with a crop, bondage, somewhat forced masturbation, some toys, denied release and one interesting scene with chili peppers). There were a couple of things I really did not enjoy; one was when Derek fingered Blue without any lubricant. After just learning that Blue was a virgin. I had to force myself to assume that it was part of a BDSM scene, otherwise it made no sense and I would have started to hate Derek. There is also a piercing scene that did not sit well with me. I did not like that Blue was treated like some house pet, staying home, not having to work and catering only to sexual whims (Derek’s or his own).

The rest of the story just flowed without my paying attention. The plot line suddenly became more complicated when a villain makes another appearance, along with Vito, the bodyguard, and Blue’s estranged father. But everything is wrapped up very suddenly and conveniently. It wasn’t realistic at all in my eyes. There were too many new variables introduced in the story that had no room to grow. They were added to the story but not developed enough.

So overall, a 3 star rating from me. There was no Dominant/Submissive atmosphere to the characters’ relationship and I very much felt like they were trying things out, rather than establishing something concrete. I couldn’t connect with either of the MC’s to make sense of their choices and find logic in how they acted. I still found the story interesting enough to keep me reading till the end, but it was such a shame that I never managed to fall in love with the characters. This book might appeal to those who want to try BDSM but not delve too deep, who enjoy a damsel in distress scenario and like a happy ending.

Don’t take my word for it, though. It wasn’t all bad, just not a favourite of mine. Give it a try and see if you connect with the characters better than I did :)

I didn’t work for me either and I agree with your points, Trix! I know it worked for others though! Maybe for those in for a smutty kink venture that doesn’t require too much involvement.

Indeed. I have plenty of books which I loved but other friends found ‘meh’ and vice versa XD
