REVIEW: “The Saucy Minx” by Manda Olie

With a touch of the magic that gives his recipes a culinary kick, Jack Killian has been running his restaurant, the Saucy Minx, for nearly a decade—almost as long as there’s been a spell out there promising to knock him off his feet should he ever meet the other half of his whole. Each day Jack delights his clientele by magically imbuing his food with taste and emotion, even as he slowly loses hope that the man of his dreams even exists.

But when he hires a new dessert manager, his whole life turns upside-down, because his dream man does exist—and he just strolled into the restaurant on someone else’s arm. While conducting business as usual, Jack struggles through what it means when destiny hands you the perfect man on a platter you’re not allowed to touch.

I like magic in my stories – which was the reason why I picked this up. Unfortunately, I wasn’t too impressed with the execution. First of all, the start of this story, the introduction to the magic ability that Jack Killian and his friend, Andrew, had was a little bit bumpy. I struggled to understand about the nature of this restaurant and what the specials menu meant.

Then, there was the plot itself – considering that Jack had waited for his soul mate for a decade, how he longed to meet the one, the idea **SPOILER ALERT ** he ended up running away for a week to the woods to avoid the guy was bewildering. It just didn’t make sense to me. I appreciated that he didn’t want to wreck the relationship, but at that point, his soul mate had broken up his relationship. So what the heck, Jack??

So yeah, some things I enjoyed – like the idea of leaving messages on one’s skin; but in overall this was just a case of a so-so story for me.

About Ami

My name is Ami and I'm an Indonesian girl in my mid 30's, living in Jakarta, the capital of Indonesia. I used to do a lot of journal writing in a different website but over the years, I started to lose interest. I am, instead, pretty active in reading and writing opinion in Goodreads. Then I start thinking that maybe I can have a blog in which I write mostly about books or joy of reading or anything related to reading activity, really. So this is what this blog is for ... although, I may be inspired to write off-books topic as well :)
