Marcus Aquila is an undercover Metropolitan police officer. His assignment is to infiltrate a slave-trafficking organisation which trades in men, bought and sold to fight in cages, sometimes to the death. When he makes the impulsive decision to intervene during a ‘kill fight’ involving a fierce young fighter called Esca, Marcus inadvertently finds himself the owner of his very own slave. Now Marcus has to find a way to complete his assignment, as well as gaining Esca’s trust, without blowing his cover. The question is, can he do it before the secrets and lies catch up with him, and Marcus loses everything?
Fanfic: The Eagle (Modern AU, Esca/Marcus Flavius Aquila)
I’m utterly hopeless with fanfic based on TV series or movies because I just don’t watch enough to appreciate the references. So I was really worried about my failing contribution this week. But apparently – and according to some of the team – all I had to do was picture Channing Tatum and Jamie Bell …you know, together. Seriously? I hear you all ask, and yes, seriously, I say. Oh I know it was a big ask, but this is a tough hobby at times – it’s not all fun and games here at BIOB ya know – but being the big hearted person I am, I was prepared to take one for team ;)
I didn’t even read the blurb before I started I just went for it and guess what? This was good! I love slave fic and I love cops, especially bad arse undercover ones like Marcus (played by Channing – whoo hoo!). I’ve never read a slave fic where the victim wasn’t a sex slave and this was refreshing and exciting. Esca as a fight slave comes with different physical and emotional scars but an inner strength and determination to fight that attracted me. What truly surprised me most was the depth of my empathy for both Esca and Marcus so early on in the story. This was helped I’m sure by the air of tension and suspense that builds to constantly feed the danger of their situation. A fight-to-the-death cage fight scene, the infiltration of a an undercover cop into a sex-slave & fight-slave ring, the fear of discovery, the build of trust and affection between Marcus and Esca, learning the truth and laying past demons to rest all makes for fast paced thrilling reading. Without melodrama.
This is only about 120 pages long and yet it doesn’t feel rushed or contrived or even too short, it’s well constructed and just a really good read. Oh the ending was a bit shallow and too neatly wrapped up but it’s not awful, it was probably just a bit too picket-fency for my taste. But what I am disappointed in – especially being the need-to-have-on-page-sex-fiend that I am – was well, the lack of on page sex. Such a waste of decent imagery especially with how well the writer builds the sexual tension and evokes such heartfelt emotions. But overall I really liked this fanfic and I’m certainly going to search out more works from PlaneJane she’s really good and definitely worth your time and mine. I’m glad I read it.
