Boys in our Books Friday Question of the Week!
Each week we’ll ask a question about your reading experience. Our review team will give our answers and we encourage you to join in and comment with your answers as well! Let’s talk about BOOKS! :)
For published books:
“Bonds of the Earth” because it looks so much like a literature book. So classy. So elegant. “Liam Davis & the Raven” because of the blend between the raven and the city. “How to Repair a Mechanical Heart” because of burst of colors and typography.
But I also give a shout for “Punch Drunk Love” which definitely was my favorite cover so far from the LL event.
It’s probably “Dark Soul Vol 1”
I have a cover love shelf on GR because I’m such a sucker for pretty things. Which means: it’s hard for me to pick just one!
I suppose the cover that really gets my heart moving is “The Place Where They Cried”. (For that matter, I love ALL of Rose Christo’s covers…)
Honorable mention for the North Star series by Posy Roberts, starting with “Spark” . Ack. I’m feeling guilty about all the ones I’m not mentioning here. Go visit my shelf so the others don’t feel left out, okay? ;)
“After Midnight” is one of the few covers that was not only visually appealing, but really reflected the gritty mood of the book. One of the few cases where a book could be judged by its cover – well written, well designed, well done.
Favorite? Oh boy or boys?
Just for the eye candy
I am in love with “Regularly Scheduled Life” & “Nothing Serious” … do I need to justify those covers? *shifty eyes*
Covers catch my eye before reading a book and then after I read it, they can actually mean so much for.
For example, “Warrior’s Cross” , that headless man is SO Julian Cross!
Oh and “Slide” , the layers on the cover and emotion as you look closer to see what’s there is just… it is in every word of that book and the cover, holding that cover in my hands gives me chills.
And last but not least is “Catch My Breath” which caught my eye and led me not only to the link that would bring me to this blog but started a whole fascination for me with a certain couple.
Every single one of covers for The Rifter series by Ginn Hale. I would LOVE this entire collection on my bookshelf one day.
Eckkk, this is a tough one!
I love “Infected” (actually the entire series is full of kick-ass covers), but “After Midnight” is a close second.
And because I am totally smitten with this one , I have to give “Punch Drunk Love” a shout out too!
I wholeheartedly agree with the votes for “After Midnight” and alongside that there’s “1/27” which I adore both visually and for it’s foreboding feel.
Yet, my favorite cover is for S.A. McAuley’s An Immovable Solitude. The picture is photographed by Hougaard Malan and is in fact the exact bay in which the story is placed.
I have gazed at that cover for ages and I’m sure little love hearts can be seen in my eyes as I stare at it. :) It’s natural beauty, the volatile sea that sweeps in and out of the channel bringing new life and sometimes taking life, too, and the hues which both stir and relax me. It’s just such a beautiful and relevant cover to the story. <3
I think one of my all-time favorites is “Evenfall” I stared at this cover for months as it dared me to read this series. It’s haunting. And though I really love the new Directors Cut covers, I’m sad to see this one go.
A few others I like: “Love Lessons” is quirky & fits the book perfectly. “Devil at the Crossroads”…never read the book, but the cover is gorgeous!. I love the covers for the whole The Administration series, but most especially “First Against the Wall”. I think the cover for “Imaginary” is adorable , and finally, I pretty much LOVE every single cover of Jordan Castillo Price’s, but this “Vertigo” one is so freaking hot….
Ami called one of my faves with Bonds of Earth, so I’ll go with some others–I actually do really love “Discreet Young Gentleman” , not just for being so over-the-top Gay Romance, but also I love the illustration style and the rich colors. As for the ubiquitous Headless Torso covers, I think “Strong Hand” is probably my fave.
Gosh, this is a VERY difficult decision. Does fanfiction count? If so, my vote will go to “Redemption Road” . While the exact scene depicted on the cover isn’t 100% accurate, it manages to capture the overall emotion and energy of the moment. You have Dean Winchester holding on to Castiel in a desperate life/death situation. Will their profound love be enough?
In terms of published works, I will have to go to “Dark Space” . The somber colors match the overall tone of the book, and Brady looks exactly how I pictured him while reading!
Oh – wow, some fabulous covers. I may be just a little bias but the Punch-Drunk cover is absolutely one of my all time favourites too. And not only is it visually appealing it is a great representation of (the fantastic) story inside. If a book should be judged by it’s cover, this one is is a winner.
I’m pretty sure I’m going to read all of Sue’s choices just by seeing their covers here and also the Garret Lee one (which is on my TBR) and the Jay Northcote one. A cover does make a difference, when it really shouldn’t. (Personally I put off reading BOATK because I didn’t like the cover much – but look what a fabulous gem is hidden in those pages!
Okay, I might shut up now…

Easy and not so easy. The cover for Evenfall, sheesh, it’s so beautiful. I remember the first time I saw it… kept wondering if that was a real person, and if so, where the heck was he. Who came up with that and what is the story behind this person. I remember hoping so hard that the story would fit that face and hair. Did it ever. I can never thank Shelley enough for pushing me to read it.
The cover for Dark Soul Vol 1 hooked me as soon as I saw it… it’s one of those that you just know has a character so messed up it had to be great. And after reading it? SILVIO!
And then there’s After Midnight… That cover is perfect for the time and story. I love the colors, the dilapidated buildings, how it makes me feel. I love all of these and more. Thinking about this has me wanting to get back to those books. Get back to the men… those hot and sweaty assassin men. *purrrrrrr*

Among my favorites, of books I’ve read are the covers of Evenfall, Dark Soul Vol.1, 1/27, and Father Figure. I haven’t read Punch, Drunk, Love and The Rifter series yet but the covers are amazing too.

Xing! Completely agree with you about that cover model looking like the “real” Brady! I mean, how many times does that happen? Almost never!
