QUESTION OF THE WEEK: #33 – Friends vs Enemies

Boys in our Books Friday Question of the Week!

Each week we’ll ask a question about your reading experience. Our review team will give our answers and we encourage you to join in and comment with your answers as well!  Let’s talk about BOOKS! :)

Friends to Lovers OR Enemy to Lovers?

Katinka –

Definitely enemies to lovers, rawr! I’m just going to pick one of the many great examples out there: The Student Prince. Cracked me up when the MCs discovered that they were condemned to be roommates.

Tracy –

Between the two, I would go with Enemies to Lovers. The heightened tension and the slow breakdown of barriers can be quite the sight to behold (and read!) GR has a fun list to look over on this trope. My fave picks would be The Only Gold by Tamara Allen and Pressure Head by J.L. Merrow.

Sara –

*bites nails* You want me to choose? I don’t think I can! I love friends to lovers and that moment when each realize their BFF is something more and then see everything about that person in a whole new light. But enemies to lovers and the possibility of angry sex? I mean… goodness. But there is also that moment with enemies to lovers where their world gets flipped upside down and turned inside out when they realize they want the person they thought they hated. Ugh. How do I choose? Do I have to?

Enemies to Lovers: Captive Prince
Friends to Lovers: Something Like Summer

Ilhem –

Definitely Enemies to Lovers, and I’ll go with Soldiers (Special Forces #1)

Ami –

Am I the only one going with friends to lovers?!? *LOL* When I was younger, I also dreamed to fall in love with my best friend (I had a good friend whom I had a crush on). So the idea of the UST and finally realizing that this friend was what they needed their whole time is just so, so good.

My pick for best friends-to-lovers story? Gisele Ellis’ Take My Picture. I swear I burst out crying when the words “I love you” was finally said.

Xing –

Enemies to Lovers. And my vote goes to Armise and Merq from The Borders War series (book one: One Breath One Bullet), followed by Dan and Vadim in Soldiers (Special Forces).

Jenni –

Enemies-to-lovers for me! Nothing better than bristling, angry tension to move a story forward! Some of the very best stories–and series–I’ve read in m/m include varying degrees of e-to-l, including Special Forces, The Administration, Adrien English, Cut & Run, Captive Prince…mmmm. Enemies-to-lovers. YES. :D

Susan –

I’m a SAP!!! I love friends-to-lovers! Gah…I think it’s the sweetest thing EVER! And I especially love YA/NA versions. So I’ll go with Superhero by Eli Easton and Love Lessons by Heidi Cullinan.

Rachel –

I, too, am an enemies to lovers fan. I find they have the best UST’s and most satisfying resolutions. Captive Prince, Special Forces – actually virtually EVERY Voinov story (I find him one of the best at enemies to lovers stories)and Kate Islay’s In Allegiance are top e to l stories for me.

Sheri –

Hmmm, this is tricky. I love both! If I have to choose, Enemies to lovers would get my vote. Probably because I absolutely love it when an author creates a nasty arrogant son of a bitch and then makes me fall in love with them. I simply cannot choose a favorite asshole (or fave book) that I’ve become smitten with…the list is long and continues to grow.

Really? Well, I like them both, but definitely Enemies to Lovers – Special Forces and Cut & Run. Heck, I’ll be recovering from Dan and Vadim forever!

Friends to lovets is my all time, forever and always favourite theme. Probably because it feels more like love than lust! I’m a sap, what can I say. :) superhero by Eli Easton is one of my faves as are Lenny for your Thoughts and Taboo for You by Anyta Sunday.

This is tough because I love them both. I can’t make up my mind. I’ve read a lot of Eli Easton but not Superhero so maybe I’ll check it out. :-)

Enemies to lovers… The sexual tension and the hate turned into passion are so good! ;)

Enemies to lovers definitely. There’s a fine line between love and hate, and I love seeing feelings go from one extreme to another. I love too many of those stories to pick just one.

Enemies to Lovers ftw… The bigger the obstacle characters have to overcome to be together, the more I am into story; want them to be together. I like when stakes are high. ;) For example, “entire country and my uncle wants me to kill you, so how dare you being so hot” totally works for me… :D
But both are good… One of my favorite Friends to Lovers is Hot Head by Suede. ;)

I love both, but I think Enemies to Lovers wins out. S.A. McAuley’s The Borders War series is one of my favorites!

I know that it is a common place talking about the thin line that separates hate and love; I believe that the line that separates friendship and love is more thin yet. The sexual tension can be intense as much between those that pass of enemies to lovers in an instant like the heat and anticipation between friends before taking a step further on

So I prefer Friends to lovers.

I like Enemies to lovers but many times don’t seem to be credible for me

I actually like both. But I tend to read more friend to lover books.
