REVIEW: “We’ve Written Volumes & Clever Boy” by Notthequiettype & TriggerTinks

It’s that time again…fanfiction time! Several fandoms are going through a bit of a rough patch at the moment, with producers teasing left and right and flirting with the possibilities, before squashing all hope of a preferred slash pairing. Something similar is happening to Teen Wolf’s Sterek (the Stiles and Derek pairing) fandom, leading to fans boycotting Teen Wolf, just not Sterek. Thankfully! Because the Sterek stories out there are an incredibly rich source of humor, hotness and emo feels. Which brings me to the following 2 fics today, both lovely in their own way. And, as always, free. Has the Sterek bug bitten YOU yet? :)

We’ve Written Volumes (In Blood and Scars and Ink) by Notthequiettype:

Stiles is on his back on hard-packed dirt. He’s cold and there are leaves stuck to his neck and there’s a four inch gash in his side that he thinks he can feel his ribs through. There’s so much blood around him he feels like he’s floating on a pond and everything is so much dimmer above him than it was a minute ago, which is saying something because he’s in the dark center of the forest in the middle of the night. And the worst of it is that he’s alone, totally alone with the smell of his own blood drowning him and the soft side of him run through by a tree.

As his eyes slip shut, the last thing he thinks is, “This is going to kill my dad.”

Clever Boy (Clever Boy #1) by TriggerTinks:

“Do you understand,” he said brushing his nose along Stiles’ jaw. Stiles started shaking. “Why I can’t let you go?”
“Cause you’re a super psycho rapist that -”
“No Stiles,” Peter said cutting him off with a nip of his ear that Stiles flinched back from. “Use your head. Why can’t I let you go?”
“I don’t know, man. I don’t -”
“Stiles. Don’t disappoint me.”
Stiles swallowed at the thinly veiled threat, and tried to think. So, apart from the heavy molesting that was currently going on…
“I’ve seen your face,” Stiles grit out.

We’ve Written Volumes (In Blood and Scars and Ink) by Notthequiettype:

The Power of Sterek: going from “yeah, I don’t think fantasies about teens not quite getting off in a MTV show are for me” to cutting my dinner with colleagues/friends short so I could – ahhh — get back to this excellent fic.

I’m a little fascinated how my underdeveloped, cynical heart pounds a little faster every time I see or hear something Sterek. But I decided I really shouldn’t be over-analyzing how and why a woman who’s hit the big three-O a while ago started shipping this fandom obsessively. Whatever, right? This is happening.

And, damn, does it feel good!

This particular Sterek fic was pretty incredible. The writer has her shit together. It’s so crisp and clean; it drags nowhere, there’s absolutely no clunkiness, no writing issues, it never gets pretentious or melodramatic. And yet it completely nails the teenage-y TW atmosphere and is wonderfully, entertainingly in character the entire time. Even during the – hot hot hot – love scene between Sterek, their personalities aren’t temporarily pushed to the background (a mistake that I come across more often than I’d like), resulting in a sizzling, adorably anxious and amusing make-out session.

“So, I touched Derek’s leg last night and told him he had a nice face.”
Scott actually spit-takes some of the peach Snapple in his mouth on to the cafeteria table before he says, “What?”

I would’ve liked it to be longer. Kept checking the page count, fretting silently about not wanting it to end. And I think there’s so much potential for this writer to expand and turn this into a full novel, by adding more details and developing this blossoming thing between Sterek more. Of course this is fanfic, so there’s little world-building or explanation, nor should there be. And despite those few pages, I have to admit begrudgingly that We’ve Written Volumes was perfectly paced, with a good build-up, plenty funny and touching moments and then some stellar action of the kind I like best.

I’m impressed and I’d wholeheartedly recommend this one as your next daily Sterek dose! :’)

Clever Boy (Clever Boy #1) by TriggerTinks:

Bloody hell.

So this is…*cough*….wheeww..not your average upbeat Sterek fic. Which makes sense; the deliciously intelligent, but also creepy sociopath Peter Hale stars in it. Maybe this is considered cheating. Because this is Steter fanfic rather than Sterek. I’m taking my chances though: this fic is simply worth mentioning.

It’s insane, stumbling upon a top notch Stockholm Syndrome trip on AO3. I can’t believe that this 100 pages novella contains everything; sensation, obsession, excitement, creepiness, horror and sadness. Damn. I’m almost sad that this is ‘only’ fanfiction.

The beginning of this fic was a bit weak. But a combination of the author getting better along the way and me being gripped by the throat, made that I hardly noticed any tense switches, the no-pronoun disease or a somewhat sparse vocabulary (smirking, stomach rolling) to describe the MCs emotions anymore. With a little more work in those departments, a slightly slower built up and more attention to details — descriptions of the MCs surroundings for example — this would have blown my mind.

Uh, what am I blabbing about? It did blow my mind. Despite it not being perfect. Go figure.

Extra stars for Peter’s lines, that kept punching me in the gut over and over again. I swear I had goosebumps more than once. Can I give a 6th star for the ending that thankfully wasn’t sugarly sweet cuckoo? Mind the content warnings if you’re interested in reading this one. It’s approach with caution material.
