Boys in our Books Friday Question of the Week!
Each week we’ll ask a question about your reading experience. Our review team will give our answers and we encourage you to join in and comment with your answers as well! Let’s talk about BOOKS! :)
Few years ago, I would’ve said 4 because I was still new in the genre, I wanted to read as many authors as I could (and they were pretty much all new to me). Nowadays, my scale is pretty much 2. I’ve settled down. I know which authors I love, and whose writing I enjoy. I still check new authors here and then, but mostly after I read reviews from trusted friends (reviewers).
Considering even the most popular authors are still new to me as a reader I guess it would be a 4. If the blurb has a hook, looks good and I see the friends who read close to my taste have liked it, I’ll try it.
Ooooo! I’m always up for a new adventure. I’d probably say a 5…I’ll try (just about) anything once. Seconds though? More like a 3.
I’m most definitely a high 1, low 2 when it comes to risk-taking on a NEW author. New-to-me is a different ball of wax. If it’s somebody well known and who my GR friends and/or fellow bloggers enjoy, I’m much more likely to go for it.
Tricky. 2 perhaps? I don’t make a lot of difference between new-to-me or new-new author : both can open a new world of wonders to me and either have a backlist to explore or new releases to wait for. That’s exciting.I love to discover new/new-to-me authors, but I rely heavily on friends’ reviews, so I am not much of a risk taker. I go blind sometimes, and it’s usually on a whim; but it doesn’t happen often now. Shame on me.
I’d probably say 3-4. I’m more likely to try a new author if it’s a subgenre I love, like sci-fi, fantasy, steampunk, mystery, etc, and if the blurb sounds good. Sometimes I’ll get so excited about the blurb, I’ll buy without reading an excerpt, which has burned me before…but overall, I’m really up for new authors and stories if the plot and characters sound interesting.
I like to think I’m a risk taker, so a 4. I don’t mind reaching out to a book that has a good blurb (*cough* and an interesting cover *cough*) even if the author is new. Everyone has got to start somewhere, right?
I am a 3. Everything in perfect balance for me. When I find an author I love, I devour their works, but they can only feed me for so long until I acquire a taste for something new.
I’d say I’m a 2. Like others, I used to be much braver about trying new stuff…because everything was new. Nowadays, I have my go-to authors that I rely on. Since I don’t DNF, taking a chance with my time and reading energy is riskier. I will say I’m more willing if the book is shorter (< 200 pgs) and if it’s a contemporary or YA book.
