…we're keeping our name but expanding our offerings!
Narrated by: Chris Patton
Someone’s out to get Los Angeles bookseller Adrien English. His best friend has been viciously murdered, now he’s getting weird phone calls and sinister gifts from a mysterious “admirer.” The cops think he’s trying to divert suspicion from himself – with the exception of sexy and homophobic homicide detective Jake Riordan. Is Riordan really such a great detective – or does he have a few secrets of his own? Is his offer to help Adrien on the level or is he out to nail his favorite suspect – to the wall?
I’m not sure there are too many people out there who hasn’t read Josh Lanyon’s Fatal Shadows. The book blurb does a great job summarizing what this first entry into the Adrien English series is all about: bookseller/mystery author by the name of Adrien (duh) finds himself suspect to his best friend’s murder. Obviously, there’s mystery. Romance? Not so much, but we do have the beginnings of an interesting relationship that will develop more (a lot) in the other entries into the series.
In terms of plot, I would say Fatal Shadows falls flat. I’m not a fan of books that focus mostly on the mystery. In a way, the first book was my least favorite in the Adrien English series. Furthermore, there’s no real romance that happens. Yikes! Instead, we get a lot of Adrien – what he’s about; what makes him tick. I love the guy to bits, with his wit and humor with people, his love of books, and dislike of homophobic cops. There’s so much to the guy and you just can’t help but be drawn by Adrien’s character.
So if the plot is flat, why give this 4 stars? As a book, I would give it 3 stars. As an audiobook? Well, that’s a whole different story.
I’m not gonna lie: I’ve listened to this sucker three times already (from beginning to end). Chris Patton nailed the voices of both Adrien and Jake. I can’t even reread any of these books without Chris’ voice narrating in the background anymore. He even makes each character’s voice distinct – they don’t all sound alike, as I’ve found annoying with other audiobooks by different narrators. It was simply a delight. The pace of narration was perfect – not too slow or too quick. He gets it done just right. He also doesn’t read in monotone. Instead, Chris infuses the right kind of emotions into his storytelling.
So overall? Great voice, great pace, and great emotions. I would never actually reread Fatal Shadows as it was kind of boring the first time around with all the mystery and none of the romance. But as an audiobook narrated by Chris Patton? Well, I’ve already mentioned listening to this three times…
I would definitely recommend the audiobook over the book, and definitely to both veterans and newbies to the series.
