GUEST READER REVIEW: “My Dumb Jock” by Jeff Erno

Guest Review

Boys in our Books welcomes KRISTIE with a Guest Reader Review

The final book in the Dumb Jock series brings us back to Jeff and Brett thirty-plus years after their “happily ever after.” Jeff, now a university professor, and Brett, CEO of a sporting equipment company, prepare to celebrate Brett’s fiftieth birthday. Suddenly, a devastating emergency derails all plans. Fear and unknown questions force the couple to look back on a lifetime of struggles as an openly gay couple just starting out in the 1980s. My Dumb Jock chronicles their life together, beginning after the sports banquet at the conclusion of book one, continuing through their college years, engagement, wedding, and the birth of their children. Together they shoulder homophobia and rejection and build their own family in the face of many crippling losses and temptations. This final book of the series brings together an entire cast of characters from five books, all connected by one remarkable couple. A couple not quite ready to say good-bye.

A quick note… If you’ve not read all 5 previous books in the Dumb Jock series, you don’t need to, but it would help. At minimum, you’ll want to read book 1. If you have and liked it, you’re in for a treat.
My Dumb Jock is like a huge epilogue of Jeff and Brett’s lives. I love books that have an established couple. We pick up their story on Brett’s 50th birthday. There is going to be a party. It’s going to be a simple family affair, all the kids and main characters from all the previous 5 books are celebrating with the two dads, and while going through the day with Jeff as our guide, he takes us on a journey of memories of the last 30 years. I’m not normally one for flashback scenes, those moments when the book takes out out the present and dumps us back in time, but this really works. It’s a fun journey to take and I’m so glad I did.
Memories on how they got together, how and when they decided for kids, a glimpse of what college was like, working through issues any couple deals with. It’s all here in a nice little package. All the fun, all the tears, all the love. I loved these guys in the first book, and I’ve fallen in love with them all over again. They have so much love for each other, their family, and others. Really, if you want to immerse yourself in a mushy love fest, this books gives it to you. It’s easy to dive in and let their almost perfect lives take over.
