REVIEW: “Blood & Ghosts” by Shira Anthony

Sequel to Blood and Rain

With vampire Nicolas Lambert’s marriage to a rival clanswoman only weeks away, Adrien Gilbert struggles to come to terms with his defeat at the hands of Verel Pelletier, a vampire hunter and an immortal like himself. Adrien and his former teacher, Roland Günter, begin to explore his newly acquired abilities. But without his soul’s sword, Adrien flounders.

On Nicolas’s wedding day, a two-hundred-year old secret is revealed, sending the wedding party into a blazing battle between hunters and vampires. Once again Adrien finds himself facing Pelletier’s superior strength. Just as Adrien believes all hope of a future with Nicolas is lost, he finally learns his true gift—he can turn back time. But time travel comes with a high cost. To save Nicolas, Adrien must become strong enough to use his power without descending into madness.

Sheri: ….ending?! Talk about a cliffhanger. I might have been slightly grumpy if I wasn’t prepared to start book 2 immediately. And things don’t slow down here, nor do they finish all neat and tidy. I’m stoked for book 3….and this time we have to WAIT!

Deirdre: the waiting …Gah! But I will be planning my calendar around book 3. I did just check on the smartphone that there is not yet a release date for that book yet. I shall work on my patience apparently, lol.

The ending of book 1. Yes. I am so glad we started this buddy read with the first 2 books at least, I think I would have exploded if I could not have started book 2 right away. There is no neat ending, but wow is there action and anticipation! Suspense!

Sheri: What did you think about the overlapping time? Or should I say timeline in general? Did you find yourself lost? Fast-forward, rewind, shift here, shift there….whoa, I was spinning. Hubby claims I’m navigationally challenged…so, I don’t know if it was just me?

Deirdre: The time table, up, back, sideways, and everything in between was confusing. It made me pay much closer attention to each chapter heading and I did find myself scrolling back to see which time period I was in.

Sheri: I admit to flipping back to reread and then after I finished I had to reread a few parts again. I was afraid I might have missed something!

So we have: ~the vampires, the hunters and the immortals ~we have bloodlust (biting and sharing memories along with blood…soooo cool!), magical powers, and time travel. ~a war stretching across centuries with great loss and great love.  Wow….she didn’t leave much out, did she?

Deirdre: NO!!!  Everything is in here. Good versus evil. Regret and pain. Love and loss. Some of the world aspects are different in this world as opposed to other vampire worlds. The difference between turning a human to a vampire versus an immortal is interesting, one I had to chat with you about to make sure I had all the details straight on. The level of intrigue is compelling as well. We spend most of book 2 with Adrien where we learn events, past and present, right along with him. The details unfold carefully, deliberately. Again, this made me wonder about a wise wizard behind the screen pulling at the puppet strings, but perhaps that is what book 3 will reveal!

Sheri: I thought that was bloody brilliant and yes, thanks for breaking that part down with me…step by step. I needed a sounding board to confirm I understood the differences between François’ and Adrien’s transformation. Wise wizard indeed..and that damn voice! Okay, what was your favorite scene or moment?

Deirdre: I am not sure it won’t be spoilerish!!! But it is a quiet moment, one of introspection that involves Nicolas and a time piece and made my eyes a tad leaky. The voice…. Damn. It is like another character I need to figure out. great!!

Sheri: Ooooo! I know exactly which part you speak of. I agree and would add the dance. I may have read that scene multiple times. This book has a bit more steam didn’t it? We were happily rewarded with those intimate moments we craved in the first book. The emotional pull was more significant this time around in spite of the tightly wound action scenes.

Deirdre: The dance. I will go back tonight and reread that scene…..it is a good one. And yes, by 20-30% into book 2, I was completely engaged in the romantic arc of Adrien and Nicolas. It took me that long I believe because there is so much more to this book series than just a romantic story arc. I am hopeful another couple finds a way back to each other, while I am rooting for another couple to come out of the shadows…..all while hoping none of them meets the sword!

Sheri: Is it safe to say we’ll be reading book 3….book in one hand, phone in the other? No date to countdown to yet? I shall practice my patience with you. *warm hugs* Thanks my friend, this was a fabulous weekend with you and Shira’s bloodytastic vamps. Can’t wait to do it again!

Deirdre: Yes! This was great fun. *hugs right back* When we get a book release date, let’s plan something! Ereader and phones will be involved. . . . .

Sheri: It’s a date. Till next time…..
