Internal Affairs investigator Jeremy Ranklin is looking into corruption within the Reno Police Department when he’s ordered to examine the suspicious death of the Chief of Police. The assignment partners Jeremy with Detective Cristian Flesh. Though they spar at first, Jeremy earns Cristian’s trust, and they work well together.
Deeply closeted, Jeremy fights an attraction to fellow cop Kipp Mosely. The investigation brings Jeremy and Kipp together, but lies and secrets prevent things from going any further. Jeremy will need both Kipp’s and Cristian’s help to discover how deep the corruption runs—and to stay alive when the danger hits close to home.
This excerpt takes places at a fancy party (imagine everyone wearing tuxedos and expensive dresses) and takes places after Internal Affairs Inspector Jeremy Ranklin interviews two cops regarding an ongoing case. Kipp Mosely is a uniformed officer Rank has worked with and lusted after.
“After reentering the main room, I strode toward the bar and ordered a shot of cheap whiskey, downed it, then asked for a Johnnie Walker to sip. I took the drink with me and found a quiet corner where I could watch Kipp without making it obvious.
He was a handsome man; that much was for sure. He had a calming smile and seemed to interact with people easily. Even while making small talk with various partygoers, it was clear Kipp was doing his job. He kept an eye on all entrances and exits, especially when someone new arrived.
Kipp glanced my way and noticed me looking at him. He nodded, and I returned the gesture. Even as I worried about him catching me checking him out, I couldn’t stop. The tuxedo fit him perfectly, showing off his muscles as well as his gorgeous ass, which I noticed when he bent over to pick up a scarf a woman had dropped.
We made eye contact again, and I shifted my gaze quickly. However, when I returned to peering at the object of my attraction, he was still observing me. Kipp smiled lopsidedly and winked.
My heart beat twice as fast for a couple of moments, and heat invaded my groin. Damn, I wanted him so much. I hated the idea of outing myself to a fellow cop, but if he was as attracted to me as I was to him, then it might be worth it.
As soon as I finished the first glass, a waitress was there asking me if I wanted another one. The second one went down even quicker than the first, and by the time the fourth was halfway gone, I was definitely buzzed. I couldn’t keep my eyes off Kipp, and it took strength not to go up to him and monopolize his time.
Blau and Stroman wandered in and out, sometimes alone, sometimes together. It seemed as if Kipp was in charge of the main room, while the other two kept an eye on the less-populated areas.
I was on my fifth drink when Kipp called Blau over and said something in his ear. Kipp looked my way, licked his lips, and scanned up and down my body, as if he were undressing me in his mind. He grinned lasciviously, then slipped out of the room. I followed him down the hallway and to the alcove.
“Hey,” he said when he saw me. “How’s it going?”
“Not bad.” I worked hard not to slur my words.
“Any luck with Blau and Stroman?”
I shrugged. “They seem a little….”
Chuckling, I replied, “Yeah, that’s one word for it.”
“Word in the locker room is that they’re involved.”
“I got the same feeling.”
He leaned against a brick wall. “Not sure how true the rumor is, but there is something secretive about them.”
I stood directly in front of him, just a few inches separating us. It seemed too much. I wanted to be closer to him. I didn’t want any space between us.
Kipp stared at the ground, kicking around a rock at his feet. His head still bowed, he looked up at me through half-closed eyes. The sultry, sexy gaze was my undoing, and I could no longer hold back.
I stepped even closer to him as we made eye contact, and he grinned slyly. I pressed my lips to his, praying I hadn’t been imagining the pull between us.
The kiss was stiff at first. Then he relaxed and put a hand on my back to pull me closer. He pressed his tongue against my lips, and I opened my mouth. Fuck, it was amazing. It had been so long since I’d really touched a man that I almost felt like a virgin.
I caressed his cheek and shifted backward. “Wow.”
“It’s about time, Ranklin. I was beginning to think I read the signs wrong.”
My face reddened, and I glanced away. “Just took some time to gather the courage. I don’t do this very often.”
Kipp chuckled. “Me either.”
The scene from the bathhouse flashed into my head, and I wanted to ask him about it but decided against it. I rubbed our crotches together, suddenly wishing we were somewhere private. I wanted him naked as soon as possible. I nibbled on Kipp’s earlobe. “I want to suck your dick.”
“Slow down, Jeremy,” he whispered. “We don’t need to rush anything.”
I sighed. “I’ve been lusting after you for so long, it already feels like we’ve been taking it too slow.”
He buried his face between my neck and shoulder and chuckled. “I know what you’re saying. I thought you were hot the minute I saw you. I liked you even more after we started working together and I got to know you. Then that night after we busted Pointer and got drunk… I was so hard thinking of you in the other room. I thought there was a spark between us and that you would come into my bedroom.”
“I was too scared and nervous,” I admitted. “Not that I didn’t think about it.”
“I really was beginning to think I had imagined everything.”
Shaking my head, I said, “No, I’ve been attracted to you for a while.”
“Well, better late than never, right?”
I nodded and kissed him again. He wrapped his arms around me, and we rubbed our bodies together. It felt so good I didn’t want to ever let go. But when I heard a noise near the door, I jumped away and wiped my mouth.
A woman stumbled out to the alcove and lit a cigarette. She was drunk and so out of it that even if she saw us, I doubted she’d remember it.
Kipp peered at me and furrowed his brow.
“You ready to get back to the party?” I asked.
“Not just yet,” Kipp replied.
I tapped my foot nervously. We had more to say to each other, but it needed to be done in private. Preferably at his place or mine, where we could talk and get naked at the same time.
“What would you say if I asked you to dance with me inside?”
“At the party? In front of everyone? Oh hell, no. Not a fucking chance.”
Judging by his downturned lips, that was the wrong answer.
“You’re closeted.” It wasn’t a question; it was a simple statement.
I answered anyway, “Yeah.”
Kipp rubbed his face.
“Does that bother you?”
He shrugged. “No… well, yeah, kind of.”
“I have my reasons.”
He waved a hand. “Oh, I know that. Every person has to make that choice for himself. I made the choice not to live in the closet several years ago. I hated hiding part of myself.”
“What are you saying?”
“I’m just not sure I can date a man who’s not out.”
Date? Who said anything about a relationship? I took his hand because we were enough in the shadows that no one would see the action. “It doesn’t have to be anything serious.”
Kipp yanked his hand away. “That’s not really what I’m looking for, Jeremy. I give in to the need for a quickie every so often, but I always feel slimy afterward.”
“What are you saying?” I asked again.
“I don’t think this thing between us would work. We’re on different pages.”
Damn it! I clenched and unclenched my hands. “Please don’t tell anyone.”
“Of course not. I wouldn’t do that.”
